About this release
Ananda Shankar And His Music brings sitar, drum-heavy funk and psychedelic rock into a nine-track instrumental programme. Reissued by Mr Bongo, the album reflects Shankar’s grounding in Indian music alongside the sounds he encountered on America’s West Coast. Streets Of Calcutta and Dancing Drums supply the rhythmic drive that later connected with the UK’s rare groove scene. Elsewhere, The River opens into a more spacious setting, Dawn draws on Indian classical music, and Back Home adds organ and Moog to the mixture. The contrast between those meditative passages and the stronger grooves gives the album its range. This vinyl edition is housed in a tip-on sleeve.
