About this release
Freedom’s debut single brings together the modern soul groove of Can’t You See and the crisp brass of Sunshine. Formed in 1975 by students at Jackson State University in Mississippi, the band drew on funk and soul groups including Earth, Wind & Fire, The Bar-Kays and Kool & the Gang. Their 1977 pairing already shows a close-knit rhythm section, assured vocal performances and tightly arranged horns. Can’t You See centres on silky vocal hooks, while Sunshine gives the brass and rhythm section more room. Miles Away reissues both recordings in a picture sleeve with teal-green centre labels.
