About this release
Idris Muhammad’s 1977 Kudu album brings his drumming into a setting that moves between jazz-funk, disco and percussion-led instrumentals. “Could Heaven Ever Be Like This” opens the seven-track programme, while “Camby Bolongo” features Randy Brecker’s trumpet and Jeremy Steig’s flute over an intricate rhythmic foundation. The title track and “Tasty Cakes” lean towards the dancefloor; “Crab Apple” centres on a firmly drawn bass groove. On “Moon Hymn”, David Tofani’s soprano saxophone leads into a slower funk passage. This Soul Brother vinyl edition restores the album’s original programme, ending with “Say What”.
