About this release
Blue Train captures John Coltrane leading a sextet at Rudy Van Gelder’s Hackensack studio in September 1957. Lee Morgan’s trumpet and Curtis Fuller’s trombone give the front line breadth alongside Coltrane’s tenor, with Kenny Drew on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums. Four Coltrane compositions sit beside the Jerome Kern and Johnny Mercer standard “I’m Old Fashioned”, balancing blues feeling, memorable themes and extended improvisation. The title track and “Moment’s Notice” open the album before “Locomotion” starts the reverse. This DOL reissue presents the complete five-track programme on 180g vinyl.
