About this release
Mantra Moderne is the debut album from Kit Sebastian, the duo of multi-instrumentalist Kit Martin and vocalist Merve Erdem. Their nine songs bring together Anatolian psychedelia, Brazilian tropicália, 1960s European pop and jazz, with lyrics in Turkish, French and English. Written and recorded in rural France during 2018, the album uses analogue instruments ranging from oud and balalaika to tablas, MS20 synthesizer and Farfisa organ. The pair recorded to eight-track cassette, committing effects and mixing decisions directly to tape. Love, loss, language and ideology run through the lyrics, set against arrangements that combine acoustic textures with vintage electronic sounds.
