About this release
With The Soft Chaos, Nathan Haines brings the focus back to three musicians playing together. The saxophonist and flautist joins Joe Kaptein on Rhodes and analogue synthesisers and drummer Elijah Whyte for a seven-track album on Language of Sound, built around shared ideas and spontaneous musical conversation.
Recorded live in a single day, the sessions preserve the trio’s responsiveness, with vintage equipment and a Neve console giving the performances their character. Haines then developed the sound through six months of mixing and a few subtle overdubs. The result keeps improvisation at its centre, making space for shifting textures, rhythmic interplay and the unexpected turns that emerge when musicians listen closely to one another.
