About this release
African Day brings together two sessions recorded by Tete Mbambisa in 1976, recovering a double album's worth of material from the As-Shams archive. The pianist leads a group including bassist Sipho Gumede, drummer Gilbert Matthews, saxophonist Duke Makasi and trumpeter Dennis Mpale, with Basil Coetzee and Barney Rachabane joining the first session. Mbambisa's marabi roots connect the arrangements with South African piano traditions, while the seventeen-minute title piece opens the programme at an expansive pace. Compiled with direction from Mbambisa and producer Rashid Vally, the nine recordings appear across two vinyl LPs in a gatefold sleeve with the artwork commissioned for the original project.
