About this release
Reggae Africa: Roots & Culture 1972–1981 traces how African musicians developed their own reggae recordings through exchanges with Caribbean, British and American music. The nine-track vinyl selection begins with the soul-inflected “Good Bye Friends” by The Mebusas and includes Black Reggae’s rocksteady “Darling I’m So Proud Of You”. The Lijadu Sisters bring a roots approach to “Bobby”, while Christy Essien’s “I’ll Be Your Man” draws on lovers rock and a ska-like shuffle. Recordings by Georges Happi, Tala André Marie and Pasteur Lappé add further perspectives. Africa Seven’s compilation presents the vinyl programme across two sides.
