About this release
Indonesian trio BABON draws on keroncong and dangdut alongside Afro-funk, Latin rhythms and cinematic guitar arrangements on Tropical Desert. Wahyudi T. Raupp, Rayi Raditia and Rori Jiwa Putra developed the album around stories of environmental damage and the relationship between people and their surroundings. Guitar, organ, bass, percussion and brass carry most of the ten-track programme, with Frau providing the lead vocal on Pesan Dari Gurun. Bubuka also features saxophonist Hario Bagusatma. The band's interest in sustainability and its experience of Melbourne's music scene inform a sound that moves between local musical traditions and wider instrumental influences.
