About this release
Athens Of The North pairs two early-1980s recordings by James ‘Gem’ Prewitt on this 7-inch. ‘My Love Box’ was recorded in St Louis, Missouri in 1981, with ‘Juicy’ following in 1983. Prewitt established his own Keyes Production label while studying at Forest Park Community College, writing, producing and playing on his releases. After local success, he worked with fellow St Louis artist Loretta Mathison and toured in the Philippines and Germany, experiences that fed into the later material. The single brings those two disco-funk recordings together, with a handmade Riso sleeve for this edition.
