About this release
Each Man Makes His Destiny captures Ice before the group’s better-known recordings as the Lafayette Afro-Rock Band. After moving from the United States to Paris, the musicians became the resident session band at producer Pierre Jaubert’s Parisound studio, absorbing influences from the city’s Barbès district into their funk sound. Recorded in 1973, the eight-track debut brings psychedelic textures and Afro-funk rhythms together with pointed social themes. Too Little Room and Suicide convey a sense of pressure, while the wider programme reflects the band’s determination to move forward. Strut’s edition returns the album to vinyl with remastering by The Carvery.
