About this release
J.E. Movement’s 1988 debut brings South African pop together with the rhythms and production of UK street soul and new jack swing. The duo of bassist and composer James Nyingwa and Elliot Faku built six songs around strong basslines, programmed drums and hip-hop-styled vocals, working within Johannesburg’s TRS Studios circle. “Ma Dea Luv” opens the album, followed by “Marco” and “Friends”, with “Funkytown”, “Jack I’m Sorry” and the group’s self-titled track on the reverse. Afrosynth’s reissue presents a record that connects the bubblegum era with the international dance-pop sounds reaching South Africa at the end of the decade.
