About this release
Studio Rio places Marvin Gaye’s original “Sexual Healing” vocal within a new samba arrangement, produced by Christian and Frank Berman. Working from the multitrack tapes, the brothers brought the voice together with musicians recorded in Rio de Janeiro, with Torcuato Mariano arranging the music. Pretinho da Serrinha’s percussion and cavaquinho help shape its shuffling groove, while horns and harmonies build around Gaye’s performance. Inspired by Brazilian recordings of the 1960s and 1970s, the version gives the familiar song a different rhythmic setting. The instrumental appears on the reverse, bringing the arrangement and its interplay of percussion, strings and horns into focus.
