About this release
Mondo Freaks’ debut album brings the Melbourne ten-piece’s live-band approach to boogie, funk and soul into eight original songs. Built around bassist Luke Hodgson and drummer Graeme Pogson, the group draws on the crisp arrangements of late-seventies and early-eighties R&B while keeping vocals and songwriting in the foreground. Jade MacRae leads six tracks, with Aaron Mendoza appearing on Won’t You Decide and Francisco Tavares taking Pumped! towards a tougher funk sound. Mixed by Michael Brauer, the album moves from Turn This Love Around and Bells Are Ringing through to Shifting Sands, giving its interlocking instruments and contrasting voices room to develop.
