About this release
Paul Pena's self-titled debut brings together bluesy funk, piano-led ballads, soul and acoustic gospel, held by his deep voice and guitar playing. First released in 1972, the album moves from the uplifting country-soul feel of Woke Up This Morning into the heavier groove of I'm Gonna Make It Alright. The River gives the arrangements more space, while Lullaby closes with strings and gospel shading. Pena's songwriting connects those shifts in mood, keeping the record grounded in direct, expressive performances. Different Strokes For Different Folks presents the album here as an eight-track vinyl reissue.
