Recorded in Austin with producer Kirk Yano, How Did I Ever Get This Blue? brings Solomon Hicks' blues playing into a setting that also draws on soul, funk, gospel and contemporary production. The follow-up to Harlem moves between original songs, reworked pop material and blues standards, with a studio band that includes drummer Chris Layton and turntablist DJ Logic. Hicks uses the contrasting material to explore different sides of his guitar playing and songwriting, combining familiar roots forms with electronic elements and harder-edged riffs. The result reflects his interest in extending the language of the blues while keeping its expressive core.
