About this release
Athens Of The North revisits the sole single released as Sugar Bear & The Sensations, a Houston soul group led by Clyde Gambrel. What About Me Girl pairs a slow, emotionally direct vocal performance with the interplay of falsetto and group harmonies, supported by guitar and flute. It Won’t Be Long brings a contrasting lift on the reverse, using a straightforward arrangement to let the voices carry the song. The reissue was cleared with Gambrel, reconnecting these recordings with the musician behind the group. Together, the two sides offer a close view of the band’s warm, unpolished approach to deep soul.
