Thee Sacred Souls - My Heart is Drowning

Thee Sacred Souls pair two songs from Got a Story to Tell on this Penrose 7-inch. ‘My Heart Is Drowning’ opens with an echoing figure behind Josh Lane’s account of a lover weighed down by past mistakes. Brooding piano and a gritty bassline give the midtempo arrangement its darker tone, connecting the group’s soul sound with earlier R&B. On the reverse, ‘Stuck in the Mud’ brings a subtle gospel influence through its call-and-response vocals. The two tracks share an intimate vocal focus, with the second side offering a different response to the first song’s atmosphere of regret.
