Gideon Nxumalo - Early-mart

Gideon Nxumalo was a key figure in the development of modern South African jazz, working as a pianist, composer, arranger, teacher and radio presenter. Early-Mart, recorded in February 1970, pays tribute to drummer Early Mabuza, who had died the previous year. Produced by Rashid Vally, it was originally issued on Soultown, the label that later became As-Shams/The Sun. The album pairs the extended title piece with ‘Frustration’, ‘Slow Blues’ and ‘When the Saints Go Marching In’. Released shortly before Nxumalo’s own death, it captures an important meeting of composition and ensemble playing in his final recorded chapter.
