About this release
Madala Kunene’s debut recording brings Zulu folk traditions together with township blues in the style he calls ‘Madala-line’. Produced by bassist Sipho Gumede in 1990 for David Marks’ 3rd Ear Music, the album draws on traditional songs, nursery rhymes, lullabies and Kunene’s own experiences. His guitar playing and singing are shaped by Zulu folklore and a spiritual approach to composition, with dreams and ancestral messages informing the material. Recorded at RPM Studios, the seven-track programme includes ‘U-Gongo’, ‘Vumela Abaphansi’ and ‘Sanibonani’. Bella Union’s vinyl reissue returns this early document of his music to LP.
