About this release
Istikhbars And Improvisations presents Mustapha Skandrani’s solo piano interpretations of Arabo-Andalusian musical forms. Recorded in Paris in 1965, the album alternates nine modal themes with improvisations based on each, making eighteen pieces in total. Skandrani transfers material associated with Algerian vocal tradition to the piano, bringing precise articulation and a clear rhythmic sense to music shaped by exchange across the Mediterranean. Raml Maya, Sika, Mezmoum and Kourdi are among the modes explored through this recurring theme-and-variation structure. EM Records’ vinyl edition includes English and Japanese liner notes, offering context for the pianist’s distinctive meeting of classical traditions.
