About this release
Mitchum Yacoub reinterprets Fela Kuti’s Water No Get Enemy through cumbia, bringing a four-piece horn section to the song’s Afrobeat foundations. His experience drumming with Seun Kuti and Egypt 80 informs the connection, while the change of rhythm gives the arrangement its own character. On the reverse, Zaire takes inspiration from the Zaire ’74 festival, leaning towards the James Brown side of Afrobeat with an emphasis on bass. Released together by Jazz Room Records, the two tracks approach the meeting of cumbia, funk and Afrobeat from different rhythmic angles.
