Shirley Tetteh // Music They Love #39

Posted by on

'Music They Love'... we ask DJ's and producers to delve into their collection and put together a selection of records that have meant a lot to them in the past, as well as the present. All things inspirational and influential - the records which have shaped their sound as a producer or selection as a DJ.

This week we are delighted to share a mix from the uber-talented guitarist and singer Shirley Tetteh! Shirley started her journey into jazz through Tomorrow's Warriors and has since gone on to play in bands such as Nérija, Maisha and SEED Ensemble, as well as releasing music under her moniker 'Nardeydey'. Shirley spoke us through the selection she put together for us:

"This mix has a fairly singular focus throughout, apart from the middle section, where it follows a very loose thread through many genres! It heavily features percussive music from the Cameroon via the genius drummer Brice Wassy, then travels to Columbia via the interpolations of Nubya Garcia, and Cuba through the wonderful group 'Afrocuba'. It also visits Malian master musicians Ali Farka Toure and Idrissa Soumaoro, before somehow linking Kokoko and Italo Disco phenoms Cube, and music from the 'London jazz scene' inspired by the breadth and range of black music (some of which is represented here) before ending back where we started with Brice Wassy once more.

It's less a description of all my influences, and more an ode to percussion, rhythm, and rhythm's place (as king?) in improvisation. I cannot say enough how studying rhythm and improvisation has affected the way I play and interpret music. Thank you to all those who have contributed to this education. Please enjoy!"

Throughout October we are donating 10% of ColdCuts // HotWax revenue to CDR and Tomorrow's Warriors. Find out more here.
