About this release
Trumpeter and educator John Lamkin originally self-released Hot in 1984, bringing together jazz, funk, soul and Latin influences. Jazz Room Records revisits the six-track album here, opening with the funk rhythms of ‘Ticket’ before moving through ‘722’, ‘Flower Power’ and ‘Aiya’. ‘Flower Power’ introduces a vocal soul-jazz direction, while the title track stretches towards eighteen minutes, giving Lamkin’s trumpet a much longer setting. ‘Maliala’ closes the record. The album moves between concise pieces and that extended title performance, presenting different sides of Lamkin’s approach across the two vinyl sides.
