About this release
Nyami Nyami returns to Zimbabwe’s Gramma Records catalogue for Tichazomuona, recorded in 1986 by Dumisani Maraire with his wife Maichi and daughter Chiwoniso. Maraire had helped introduce Shona mbira music to American audiences after moving to the United States in the late 1960s; this album followed his return to an independent Zimbabwe. A young Chiwoniso takes the lead vocal on the title track, years before her international solo career. Across eight pieces, the reissue documents an important family collaboration around nyunga nyunga mbira, connecting the label’s later release of Chiwoniso’s 'Zvichapera' with her earliest recordings.
