About this release
Michael Gray brings live musicians into the disco and soul foundations of ‘Optimism’, a thirteen-track album on his Sultra Records label. Drums come from Jamiroquai’s Derrick McKenzie, with percussion by Incognito’s Russ Tarley and string arrangements by Stephen Hussey. Made over a year and a half, the album combines those performances with Gray’s house production, moving from ‘Ivy’ and ‘Fly Away’ through to ‘Never Let You Down’. Strings and horns contribute to the arrangements across the record, reflecting the Full Intention producer’s longstanding interest in disco. This edition presents the complete programme across two twelve-inch records in a gatefold sleeve.
