About this release
Qwalia shape recordings from their April 2021 sessions at London’s Fish Factory into seven pieces on ‘Abbreviations’. Led by drummer Yusuf Ahmed, the quartet features Ben Reed on bass, Tal Janes on guitar and Joseph Costi on keyboards and synthesizers. Editing and post-production give the improvised material its final form, with guests Ernesto Marichales, Miryam Solomon and Valeria Pozzo adding percussion, vocals and strings. ‘Elevator Company’ condenses a longer guitar-led improvisation around Solomon’s wordless singing, while ‘The Spin’ captures the group’s more intense side. The album moves between jazz, ambient textures and ensemble improvisation.
