About this release
Beat Bop pairs Rammellzee and K-Rob over an extended, sparse funk backing, with the two rappers taking on the roles of hustler and B-boy. First issued in 1983 on Tartown, the recording became closely associated with Jean-Michel Basquiat through his cover and label artwork. Its loose, swirling instrumental leaves space for the voices to develop across the long arrangement, creating an unusual early hip-hop recording. This Mr Bongo 12-inch places the vocal on one side and the instrumental on the other, allowing the backing track to be heard in full alongside the performance.
