About this release
Spirits Rejoice combine South African jazz with soul, funk and fusion on their self-titled album. Robbie Jansen’s saxophone, flute and vocals join Sipho Gumede’s bass, Mervyn Africa’s electric piano and synthesizer, Paul Petersen’s guitars and Gilbert Matthews’s drums, with further horn and percussion contributions shaping the arrangements. The eight-track programme moves from ‘Emakhaya’ and ‘Woza Uzo Kudanisa Nathi’ through ‘Music Is Our Purpose’ to the closing ‘Papa’s Funk’. Frederiksberg Records’ reissue is remastered from tape by Greg Reierson, with artwork restoration by Javi Bayo. A booklet includes detailed liner notes by Calum MacNaughton, placing the music in its South African context.
