About this release
J Jazz Volume 4 focuses on Nippon Columbia’s modern jazz catalogue between 1968 and 1981. Compilers Tony Higgins and Mike Peden bring together fourteen vinyl selections, moving from Takeo Moriyama’s Exchange and Jiro Inagaki’s psychedelic modal blues to the samba of Takashi Mizuhashi with Herbie Hancock. Large ensembles led by Nobuo Hara and Toshiyuki Miyama sit alongside keyboard-led pieces from Masahiko Sato, Hiromasa Suzuki and Mikio Masuda. Kiyoshi Sugimoto and Kazumi Watanabe add contrasting guitar approaches to a programme that ranges across jazz-rock, fusion and post-bop. The triple-vinyl edition includes a gatefold sleeve, obi strip, insert and extensive notes, with mastering by Frank Merritt at The Carvery.
